DESCRIPTION:Join us for our May potluck and square dance! Don’t know how to do-si-do or allemande left? No problem! No experience or partner necessary. All dances will be taught by the caller. \nIf joining for the potluck\, please bring a dish to share (if you can) and a label with ingredients for people with dietary restrictions. If you don’t have time\, don’t worry! Join us for a delicious meal anyhow. This is a non-alcoholic\, all ages event. \nPotluck: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Eat\, chat\, and make friends! \nDance: 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm. Dance\, laugh\, and cry tears of joy! \nLocation: Fairhaven Library\, 1117 12th St\, Bellingham\, WA 98225 \nEntry: $12–15; $8 students (by donation) \nAbout the band: Hailing from Bellingham the Alder Leaf Stringband includes Levi-Woolen Danner\, Stuart Illson\, Andy Rick and Jesse Stein. Favorite pastimes include tearing into the old chestnuts and long walks on the beach. \nAbout the caller: Alex MacLeod is a square dance fiddler and caller from Seattle. An early member of the Seattle Subversive Square Dance Society\, Alex has played or called for dances in barns\, on boats\, in fields and at farmer’s markets\, in kitchens and on back decks\, in taverns and in church basements\, in grange halls and every once and awhile in big ballrooms with sprung wood floors! Alex learned his early old-time fiddling from the Canote brothers string band class\, in Seattle\, then almost immediately threw himself into organizing and playing for square dances. He learned his calling from square dance communities in the Pacific Northwest\, and from national masters at events including The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes and Dare To Be Square West. Alex believes that music and dance are essential parts of communities making their own fun\, and strengthening connections along the way. Outside of old time pursuits\, you might find him out foraging\, hunting\, and hiking all over the Northwest\, building instruments in his shop\, or dutch oven cooking in a campground somewhere.

Dance\, laugh\, and cry tears of joy! \nLocation: CTK Downtown\, 1419 N Forest St\, Bellingham\, WA 98225 \nEntry: $12–15; $8 students (by donation) \nBand: Sparklebrite Dance Band is a never-before-heard PNW old-time quartet featuring Kate Lichtenstein on fiddle\, Matt Sircely on bass\, Stuart Illson on banjo\, and Andy Rick on guitar. \nCaller: Devin Champlin is a Bellingham-based musician and artist who makes up songs for singing with his band\, likes to play old fiddle music on a variety of instruments\, and can occasionally be found calling at square dances. He first learned to call by playing in the band at many-a-dance and eventually absorbed enough of the moves and patter to be able to call a few dances on his own. Since the club formed in 2024\, WAM Stringband has played a variety of events\, including square dances\, concerts\, and puppet shows. The WAM Stringband has performed at the North West Folklife Festival\, the Bellingham Folk Festival\, and at many venues in the Bellingham area. The WAM Stringband recently recorded an old-time music album\, which will be released on Bandcamp soon. While the WAM club operates separately from the band\, they both are committed to creating spaces for all people to enjoy and participate in folk music.
